THE SPIRIT PENCIL PORTFOLIO by Will Eisner.  This is a limited edition of 100 OF WHICH THIS IS 10/100 numbred on the first Plate in Pencil and on the matching Certificate of Authenticity. When I approached Will to do a Spirit Portfolio for my Collectors' Press imprint the intent was to capture quintessential Spirit scenes with brand new paintings.  Will eagerly took to the project and six months after he started I picked up 11 paintings from him at his White Plains, NY, home and studio.  Printed via offset lithography using the highest quality printing on special acid free Strathmore art stock, Will was exceedingly happy with the resulting fidelity to his originals.   When we were in the planning process of the Portfolio Will sent me page after page of suggested ideas for the Plates that he sketched on 9x12 drafting paper.  I thought these were so gorgeous that I included the concept sketches for one of my favorite Plates, "Dead End" as a bonus 11th plate.  And I didn't stop there.  The inside front and back of each hardbound slipcase has several more of the pencils.  One year later due to popular demand we published this special edition Pencil Portfolio as a companion to the mass market edition.  The Pencil Portfolio contains  18 full size Plates plus a 19th Plate of the unused art for a wraparound cover.  These pencil renditions are gorgeous and combined with an 8 page booklet containing the genesis of the project and letters from Will and myself discussing the Portfolio it makes a perfect and complete companion to the full color paintings. The Portfolio is encased in a handmade hardcover slipcase that exactly matches the mass market color Portfolio.  This was commissioned from the 100 year old San Francisco book binding firm Cardoza James.  Each one of the 100 slipcases was hand made with special "Spirit Blue" buckram cloth debossed on the front in gold with a special title logo Will created for the Portfolio.  Special laid end papers and containment flaps finished off the inside with the two extra preliminary drawings.  We offered this special very limited edition to the original buyers of the first 100 Spirit Portfolios.  Not everyone purchased the matching number and now you have the opportunity to add this ultra rare and beautiful item to your collection.

Also included in this package is a set of color photos I took during various visits to Will and Ann's home in White Plains in the late '70's (jeez, he was 10 years younger then than I am now - and he seemed so old then - but vital, playing tennis nearly every day and eating healthy).  Also some more material including copies of letters he sent me as well as a copy of the very rare "Spirit Chardonnay" wine label and...well even a few more cool Eisner and Spirit items.
