The Genesis of Iron Man

The milestone Tales of Suspense (TOS) issue #39 (March 1963) introduced the superhero Iron Man, created by then Marvel editor and plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, and artists Don Heck and Jack Kirby. Iron Man began his run starring in generally 13-page but occasionally 18-page adventures, with the rest of Tales of Suspense devoted to the anthological science fiction and fantasy stories it normally ran. TOS issue #39 was reprinted in its entirety in 1993 & 1994 as Marvel Milestone Edition: Tales of Suspense #39.

After debuting with bulky gray armor, Iron Man was redesigned with similar but golden armor in his second story (issue #40, April 1963). The first Iron Man iteration with his modern, sleek red-and-golden armor appeared in TOS #48 (Dec. 1963), as drawn by Steve Ditko. (Although whether Ditko or Jack Kirby, singly or in collaboration, designed the new armor, remains uncertain). From issues #53-58 (May-Oct. 1964), the cover logo was "Tales of Suspense: Featuring the Power of Iron Man".

Iron Man & Cap Team-Up

Beginning with issue #59 (Nov. 1964), Iron Man began sharing the now "split book" with Captain America, who had guest-starred in the Iron Man feature in the previous issue, TOS #58.  Jack Kirby, Captain America’s co-creator during the 1940’s Golden Age of Comic Books, had drawn the character as part of the superhero team the Avengers earlier that year (Avengers #4), and was now illustrating Captain America’s solo adventures for the first time since 1941. TOS #63 (March 1965), in which editor-scripter Stan Lee retold Captain America’s origin, through TOS #71 (Nov. 1965), all featured period stories set during WWII, and co-starred Captain America’s Golden Age sidekick, Bucky.

The Sub-Mariner Returns

Immediately following its 99th Issue, the classic Tales of Suspense series was folded & morphed into Captain America with Issue #100 (a/k/a Captain America #100, April 1968).  As for Iron Man, he briefly appeared in the one-shot Iron Man & Sub-Mariner #1 (April 1968), and subsequently, was FINALLY launched in his own long-awaited standalone series with Iron Man #1 (May 1968).  As was also the case for the Sub-Mariner (who had long showcased alongside The Incredible Hulk in TOS’s sister series, Tales to Astonish), and who now also followed suit with his own ongoing series, premiering with Sub-Mariner #1.  And all the rest, as they say, is history . . . .
