Strange Tales began as a straightforward horror comic, gradually switching to include super-hero appearances by the likes of The Human Torch. In issue #110, it made a breakthrough, introducing readers to Stephen Strange, better known as "Doctor Strange, Master of the Mystic Arts."

Strange Tales featured a pair of stories each month. Initially, Dr. Strange battled cosmic foes in one story and members of the Fantastic Four starred in the other. The Fantastic Four were replaced, in issue #135, when Strange Tales introduced Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD.

With issue #169, the formats changed again, with single stories being run each month featuring first Brother Voodoo, then Warlock. These new characters failed to catch on, though, and the series concluded with issue #188.
