This is the original final drawing by Sidney Smith for the daily panel cartoon that appeared in newspapers on April 17, 1933. It features Ching Chow, a Chinese adventurer-philosopher who appeared in the Sunday page installments of Sidney Smith's popular comic strip The Gumps in the 1920s. Ching Chow achieved prominence outside of The Gumps with his appearance in this panel cartoon in which he dispensed wisdom to the readers of the daily newspaper. Sidney Smith created The Gumps in 1917 and continued it until his death in 1935. This original is signed "Sidney Smith" by the artist at lower right.. "Reg. U.S. Pat. Off.; Copyright, 1933, by The Chicago Tribune" appears along the bottom.
The paper has darkened with age; there are a few spots mostly in margin: FINE condition.
