Description
This hard-to-find item is an original edition of Judge's Library No. 116 (November 1898), titled "Pigskin." The cover was drawn by Emil Flohri, a well-known, turn-of-the-century political cartoonist who later worked as an artist for Walt Disney Productions. Included in this magazine is Chapter IX of a story by journalist and short-story writer Cleveland Moffett, which began in an earlier edition of the magazine.
For a paper item that is nearly 117 years old, the magazine is intact and the interior is clean. However, the front cover has damage along the bottom (there are actually multiple small holes) and some light staining along the right side, and the back cover is damaged along the bottom (small holes/tears). There is minor damage of this type on the bottom of some interior pages. Please examine the photos carefully as I am not an expert in grading material of this type. I will be happy to answer any questions about the condition of the magazine.
An 1898 newspaper advertisement described Judge's Library as being "a monthly magazine of fun, filled with illustrations in caricature and replete with wit and humor. Its contributors are the best of American wits and illustrators."
According to A History of American Magazines, 1865-1885, the Judge Company began publishing Judge's Library: A Monthly Magazine of Fun, in 1887. Each issue was devoted to a single topic. At some point, William J. Arkell's publishing company - which also published Leslie's Illustrated Weekly - took over the magazine, and this edition was published by Arkell Publishing Co. The magazine reached a circulation of 100,000 in 1898, but circulation later declined greatly, and publication ended in 1915.
Please be warned that Judge's Library often demonstrated an attitude of racial and ethnic insensitivity, and some of that attitude may be reflected in this edition. I do not ascribe to those beliefs. I am selling this item only for its collectible/historical value and not to support the magazine's ideology.
