Description
RARE Original POPEYE daily comic strip by BOBBY LONDON, 4/18/87 (paper size: 13 1/8" x 4 1/4") white-out used in both panels. Signed.
This strip features POPEYE admiring the cartoon creations of the "Sweethaven Gazette's" Managing Editor, Elwood.
PLAYBOY cartoonist Bobby London took over the POPEYE daily strip from Bud Sagendorf in 1986.
According to the New York Journal of Books in it's review of "Popeye: The Classic Newspaper Comics by Bobby London, Vol. One: 1986–1989,"
"This is a great collection in the same way that Frank King and Dick Moore’s work on Gasoline Alley in the early sixties was beautiful.
The two strips speak to both ends of America: the relatively normal and the relatively rebellious.
Mr. London serves the legacy of Mr. Segar and Mr. Sagendorf with brilliance, wit, and originality.
Mr. London’s line adds a kinetic sense of urgency.
Combined with the large cast his style returns the daily to E. C. Segar’s original concept of the strip as a theater."
Columbia University Library acquired the "Popeye: Vol. One" book for its permanent collection.
