This auction is for:

Oor Wullie Annual 1950 - Genuinely rare former DC Thomson employee file copy

This genuinely rare book was the fourth Oor Wullie annual, a Scottish institution, having previously been published for 1940, 1942 and 1948 and one of our star lots in our current auctions.

This book likely belonged to a former DC Thomson employee - possibly Robert Duncan Low (R.D. Low), the Managing Editor of the children's publications at DC Thomson throughout the 1920s to 1960s, working on and later overseeing work on DC Thomson's Big Five papers - Adventure, Hotspur, Skipper, Rover and Wizard, he also worked on the Broons and Oor Wullie titles from 1936 when they began. Very few of these personal DC Thomson employee file copies come on to the market - indeed, very few were made to start with - we know of only two each from the years 1950-1956, including this copy.

What distinguishes this book as a file copy is the hardback covers, whilst the regular, mass produced books for the general market were softback.

The thick board covers are bright and the cloth spine tanned. Tight, square binding. Slight rub / loss to the cloth at the top of the spine. There are some light surface rubs to the covers and a few light scratches. Light wear to the board edges. A fountain pen "OW 1950" has been written down the spine and "1950" to the lower right hand front cover corner.

The book has front and rear endpapers whilst we believe the mass produced example did not - extra care taken to bind these personal copies as 'proper' hard back books.

The pages are in very nice shape with medium tanning.

A VG example of an extremely difficult book to find.
