Description
Offered here is a scarce example of the original HEAVY METAL MAGAZINE, METAL HURLANT #6, published in October 1976, which features the 1st appearance of MOEBIUS' MAJOR GRUBER and the 1st published installment of his world famous THE AIRTIGHT GARAGE OF JERRY CORNELIUS or "Le garage hermétique de Jerry Cornélius", which was later reprinted in English in HEAVY METAL MAGAZINE #7 in October of the following year - and collected many times thereafter. Plus: the original DEN by Richard Corben, works by Philipe Druillet, Jacques Tardi, Enki Bilal, Frank Margerin, Serge Clerc & others, topped off with that classic MAJOR GRUBER cover by Jean Giraud/ Moebius - simply one of the finest single issues ever published anywhere.
For those who may not know, HEAVY METAL MAGAZINE was actually METAL HURLANT, which originated in Paris in 1974, and was only imported to the US in 1977 to be reprinted here under the title HEAVY METAL MAGAZINE. The Original US HM was published by National Lampoon, but was owned and Licensed by "Les Humanoïdes Associés" - Artists: Jean (MOEBIUS) Giraud, Jean-Pierre Dionnet, Philippe Druillet, along with their business manager Bernard Farkas, who, after shaking off the creative restrictions of working in mainstream French comics, banded together to form the art collective in 1974. They decided to launch their own science fiction & fantasy themed magazine free from any censorship or creative restrictions. METAL HURLANT went on to have a profound revolutionary effect on comics and films worldwide and spawned the American version, Heavy Metal, in 1977.
Movies like the 5th Element, Blade Runner, Dune, etc., were all heavily influenced by the series and artists featured therein - and directors such as Ridley Scott, Tim Burton, Luc Besson, Hayao Miyazaki, & Alejandro Jodorowsky have all cited METAL HURLANT'S influence upon their work, as well as have many American comic artists.
METAL HURLANT (Screaming Metal - the title meant to evoke the image of comic art as explosive shrapnel) is actually the original HEAVY METAL that swept the world and spawned the movie, not the other way around, and METAL HURLANT is widely regarded as one of the greatest illustrated magazines ever published anywhere. This issue appeared about 7 months prior to the US release of HEAVY METAL MAGAZINE #1, and Heavy Metal was basically a reprinting/repackaging in English of the original material 1st published here in METAL HURLANT.
While the mag is in French, that really is no problem here, since the artists tend to let their art do the storytelling.
A scarce Bronze Age import from France, this example is in excellent - about VF- (7.0 -7.5) condition, with some overall wear - a few small color break creases at spine, great gloss, outstanding spine otherwise, white pages. Some some slight edge wear, minor indentations.
SCANS ARE OF THE ACTUAL MAGAZINE YOU WILL RECEIVE.
